VSG Surgery, 6 steps to success

VSG Surgery 6 steps to success
2013 vs 2018

How did this happen...

4 years ago today, I took a drastic measure to regain my health. I had Vertical Sleeve Gastronomy Surgery. It’s not been an easy way out as some will say. In fact, it has required a lot from me. It required intention, research; follow up, planning, self-discovery, patience, and discipline.

Intention

I was the only person that could decide that I wanted this surgery. No one else could make the decision for me.  At the end of the day, I knew my family and friends would be questioning my decision and I needed to know and understand the program in great detail so that I could educate them as I went through the process.  This required me to educate myself through research.

Research

I attended an orientation meeting at a bariatric program close to my home.  I attended one of these meetings with great trepidation, thinking I would never go forward with it.  However, I found out a bunch of great information because I also got to meet with people who had been through the program and discuss their experience.   This led me to research the bariatric surgeries further on you tube.  You tube was a great resource for meeting and seeing many people around the country and in other countries who had been through the program. I got to hear their stories of success and struggles.  This allowed me to make an informed decision about whether or not I wanted to continue.

Follow up

Once I decided to move forward with the process, I had to make a bunch of appointments and get cleared by various docs.  I had to attend 3 support group meetings, 2 dietician appointments, a psych eval and a heart doctor visit.  I was kind of lazy where these visits were concerned and it took me nearly 8 months to complete them.

Planning

Once I had more information, I needed to plan for the surgery.  I needed to plan time off from work, plan for my food during that first week after surgery.

Self-discovery

During the process, I found that, for the first time in my life, I really needed to focus on me.  There was no time or energy left to focus on others.  I was doing this for the sake of my health, so all other considerations had to be secondary.  Things like cost of food or what other people thought.

Patience

I had to be patient with the time it would take to get to the end goal weight.  The weight was not going to drop off overnight.  Sometimes this was very frustrating and at times would stall and seem like it wasn’t happening.  I wouldn’t lose weight for several weeks and then drop 4 lbs.

Discipline

I decided from the beginning to develop an eating plan that would work for me.  I wouldn’t eat crap I didn’t like just because it was healthy.  I would only eat items I enjoy that were within my dietary parameters.  So, I didn’t want to eat anything that had fake sugar in it, so I would have to find a way to have food and beverages that I enjoy that didn’t have fake sugar.  It’s been the most difficult thing to do since starting the program.  Initially, I would eat sugar in just really low amounts. Eventually, I found erythritol, a sugar substitute that doesn’t affect your insulin reaction.  However, I have stuck to my plan that I started with by eating pretty much the same way.  I eat protein with greens as my carbohydrates and drink a couple of coffees a day.  I have made a concerted effort to keep my meal sizes to the amount that I was eating several months out from surgery.

Was it worth it?  HECK YEAH!!!

Probably the single best decision I have made in my entire life. I have not regretted this decision at all, I feel better than I have in 20 years. One of the better decisions in my life. I was 50 years old at the time and had tried every diet under the sun and none of it stuck. My morbidity numbers were all headed in the wrong direction, blood pressure, pre-diabetic, cholesterol etc. All have improved. While I didn’t do this surgery to have better choices in clothing, I can say that I do enjoy shopping for clothes for the first time in my life. The surgery doesn’t do the work, it makes the work a bit easier.

Happy Surgaversary to me!

Until next time…

Top 5 Easy High Protein Breakfasts

5 Easy Protein Breakfasts for Bariatric Surgery Pre or Post Op

# 5 Homemade Protein Drink/Shakes

I start by making a good cup of coffee, usually Gevalia Decaf. You can’t get the Gevalia Decaf in Keurig cups, so, I have to use the universal filters. While that’s brewing, I will put two good glugs of heavy cream into the bottom of my favorite shaker bottle, Contiga shaker bottle and add in my favorite whey protein, Isopure Zero Carb Protein Powder, with about 1 tsp erythritol and shake that up real good. By now the coffee has brewed and I pour that in, then I add whatever flavoring’s I want, depending on my mood/taste for the day. I will typically add in my favorite vanilla brand and the top that with either raspberry or pumpkin pie spice or coconut/pineapple. The choice is really yours depending on what you like. There are several reasons why I like this Isopure Protein Powder:

Homemade Protein shakes, which I prefer over the commercial ones (but, we’ll get to those). For now, my favorite Protein shake is a coffee-based one.

  1. It doesn’t have 25 ingredients I can’t pronounce
  2. with just the shaker ball, I can get it smooth as silk and you won’t know it’s there
  3. I can make it taste like anything I want
  4. It has no artificial sweetener, leaving me to choose the sweetness level and the sweetener I prefer.

I can make this hot or iced, it’s already in a leak-proof bottle and it travels well. If you add a bunch of ice and waz it up in a blender, it’s a shake. So, if you’re a coffee drinker like me, I hope you enjoy my high protein version better than those commercial protein drinks.

# 4 Commercial Protein Drinks/Shakes

Ok, so yeah, you can purchase some Commercial Protein Drinks/Shakes by various manufacturers. I tend to purchase Pure Protein or Atkins. You can use these in several ways. Yep, just grab and go and that will work for what you need it to do. But, if you want to get in some more liquids, one of my go to’s is to just make or buy a coffee and then pour in a protein drink of choice. I know, I know, this isn’t really that new of an idea. But, it does work as a morning grab n go option.

 #3 Plain Yogurt

I’m not a huge fan of yogurt myself as it tends to give me wicked heartburn. Having said that, it’s a great grab and go high protein, lowing carb breakfast. However, Get Plain! Don’t buy the sugared up (either real or fake sweetener) yogurts. First, the ingredient list is ridiculous, you’re not eating real food, but, rather chemicals. Just my humble opinion, but just don’t do it! If you must have it sweetened, use real fruit to sweeten it, or use some erythritol or maybe some no sugar added jams. Again, do what you want, I’m just telling you my thoughts on it… go plain and add your level of sweetness and your sweetener of choice. Js

#2 Cottage Cheese

I’m a huge fan of cottage cheese! Great stats unless you buy those sweetened up choices with added jams and jellies. I’ve never enjoyed sweetened cottage cheese even as a kid, I preferred savory cottage cheese. Sooooo, cottage cheese is a texture thing for me and I’m pretty much a cottage cheese snob. I literally can’t stand most cottage cheese brands as they are too watery, goopy things… blech! I found a cottage cheese I absolutely love but I don’t know where it’s available, though I think you can go to their website and find it. It’s called Friendship! It’s taste and texture are perfect for me. Add some salt and load with pepper, YUM!

I live in upstate New York and for me, left to right… bear to worst… best is Friendship full fat cottage cheese… if you want low or no fat, they have those too and they are tasty, I just don’t go low fat. If you can’t find Friendship in your local store, start talking to your store manager. Next is Hannaford brand, which is the local market around here and frankly all their dairy products are pretty dang good. Finally, one of the most awful cottage cheese brands I’ve ever had the experience of tasting, yuk, just don’t bother. I mean maybe someone will like it, but, I honestly couldn’t even swallow it. Please try the Friendship!!

# 1 Eggs

As if this was a surprise. These are so versatile, easy to prepare for grab and go whether you make egg muffins or boiled eggs or want to grab on the run… eggs are a no brainer!! My daily quick breakfast is to make some egg muffins, but, if I run out of time to be that prepared, I’ll stop at my local Stewart’s shop and grab a egg sausage and cheese wrap. I just tear off the wrap and it’s the perfect portion size for like 160 calories and great protein and nearly no carbs. What’s easier than that?

So that’s my list of top easy breakfast ideas! I hope this was helpful to some of you. Keep in mind, I’m not a nutritionist or a doctor or even an expert. I’m just like you and these have worked for me for 4 years. I hope they will work for you.

 Until next time…
